What is PageRank?
PageRank or PR is a piece of Google technology which was developed by Google founders “Larry page” and “Sergey Brin” at Stanford University.
One of the main parts to Google’s software is PageRank which is used to score the importance of a particular page in question.
There are lots of myths out there and confusion about Googles page rank system and how it works, so have a read below for our answer on what page rank does, please note that this info is based on our knowledge and research over the years.
How does PageRank work?
Google bots crawl the web reading web pages, now once a web page has been read the hyperlinks within that page are then followed.
This means that page A has a link to page B, meaning that Google interprets this as a vote from page A to page B.
Google looks more into this, as the sheer volume of votes is not enough as it will examine the page that cast the vote as well as the page that received the vote.
Pages that cast votes which are themselves “important” weigh more and help page B to become more “important”.
Now linking from hundreds of web pages or websites to a particular page on another web site helps your vote score but the content on the voting page is also compared to the voted page meaning that providing page A is related to page B in some way then you would get a better score with a handful of links than you would with hundreds of links from unrelated sites.
What your page (page B) links to is also a factor and whether it too links to useful content or other useful related sites.
PageRank is not only determined by external links to your site or web page but also the way your internal links point to that page and again what content is on those voting pages.
Many people think that getting a high PR helps their web site get into the top of the search engines, this is not strictly true, as the web site and web page must match the search term to start with and be ranked well by Google before your site is returned in the result, this is where PageRank may have a bearing as the page that has the highest page rank which also matches the search terms will be the page displayed in the results but only after many other factors about your web site have been processed.
So in other words you may have a PR of 10 but if the page content is poor and the website content is poor then you will not be one of the websites returned on the first page even if the page is related to the search term.
You have probably seen this when you click on website's which are listed at the top of the search results but have a poor PR, yet pages further down the results have a higher PR.
